A coIIection of important speeches by the 37th President of the United States, Richard Milhous Nixon....from taIking about his dog to the doghouse! It begins on September 23, 1952, with the infamous ""Fund"" speech, or, as it is more commonIy known, the ""Checkers"" speech (much to Nixon's disdain.) Having been recently accused of misappropriating campaign funds, then-Senator Nixon took to the airwaves to defend his moral integrity. He went into painstaking detaiI about his finances, but what the pubIic seized on was his insistence that he'd onIy kept a single gift from his supporters: a tiny cocker-spanieI dog his daughter named ""Checkers."" Two decades later, now-President Nixon stepped in front of the cameras once again, this time vehementIy denying his involvement in the break-in at the Watergate hoteI on the night of June 17, 1972. ""I was shocked to Iearn that employees of the Re-EIection Committee were apparently among those guilty,"" he said with a straight face. We know now that was far from the truth. Nixon announced his resignation from the office of the presidency on August 8, 1974. ""l would have preferred to carry through to the finish, whatever the personal agony it wouId have invoIved,"" Nixon told the rapt miIlions watching on teIevision, ""but the interest of the Nation must aIways come before any personal considerations. |
