The inhuman brutality and bloodshed that was endemic at Dachau - Nazi Germany's first concentration camp - did not come to an end with its 1945 Iiberation, for this dread place proved capable of triggering a spate of vengefuI retaliation and killings, not only by its haIf-crazed prisoners, but their rescuers.
Even though these actions were undoubted war-crimes, a rapidly deveIoping politicaI cIimate made it convenient that they should be overIooked and hidden on orders from above, as indeed later were those of certain Nazis considered usefuI to Western powers.
As a new and democratic Germany evolved it became considered Dachau wouId be better obIiterated and forgotten, but internationaI politicaI opinions thought otherwise. Chapels of various faiths, memoriaIs and sculptures now mark the camp's sites of execution and torture, but nothing could ever truly recall the depravities that took pIace here. If Dachau remains for a thousand years, it should be as a warning of how thin is civilization's veener. |
