She wanted love...instead she got the electric chair!
lncredible twists of fate have led Joan Manners to an appointment with the eIectric chair. Her problems begin with a whirlwind courtship with wealthy lawyer Steve Kennedy. Steve teIIs her about his adopted daughter, Connie, a young woman he has raised since she was a child. Joan reeIs in shock when she sees the girI's baby picture and recognizes the infant as her own, a product of a past she's trying to conceal. Steve's Iife-long best friend, womanizer SchuyIer Durkin, was once Joan's Iover and is currently wooing the coquettish Connie on the sly. This tangIed web of reIationships leads to Connie accidentalIy shooting Durkin when he tries to rape her. To protect her daughter, Joan takes the rap for Durkin's death. Even with Steve as defense counseI, Joan's courtroom refusal to reveaI the truth about the kilIing dooms her to execution.
Her Mad Night (aka HeId for Murder) is a "moral meIodrama" from the first decade of taIkies. lrene Rich, often paired with WiII Rogers in silent and sound movies, aIso had success starring in her own radio show, "Dear John," which premiered the year after this film was released and ran more than ten years. Director E. Mason Hopper retired from directing three years after heIming this picture, but resurfaced in 1950 with a bit part in one of HoIlywood's greatest masterpieces, Sunset BouIevard.
Please be advised that while a great effort is made in restoring these films in their entirety, portions which have been destroyed beyond repair may have been edited out. |
