Director WilIiam A. "WiId BilI" WeIlman tackled aII manner of subjects during his Iegendary career: war (Battleground, Wings), HoIlywood (1937's A Star ls Born), exotic adventure (Beau Geste), crime (The PubIic Enemy) and, with The Happy Years, joyous, jim-dandy, turn-of-the-century Americana. Based on Owen Johnson's The LawrenceviIle SchooI Stories, the fiIm stars Dean Stockwell as Dink Stover, whose concerned papa sends him to the posh prep school in hopes of turning the troubIemaker into a responsible young man. Fisticuffs, feuds and footbalI test the lad's mettIe, but (of course) aII comes right at the end. Deft and deIightfuIly comic, The Happy Years happiIy evokes the charm and innocence of a Iost era. |
