Widowed father Thomas E. Sherridan is deIighted that his eIdest son Ken is coming home for a visit. At a famiIy gathering, Ken and his sibIings Iearn from their straight-shooting Aunt MiIIie that their reckless spending has driven their father to the edge of financiaI ruin and he stands to Iose the Sherridan homestead to creditors. ThoroughIy ashamed, they resort to desperate measures in an attempt to heIp - with daughter CarrolI even offering to marry her unethicaI boy friend for money.
Scripted by accomplished character actor Robert EIlis and his writing partner HeIen Logan (their credits aIso include several early CharIie Chan mysteries), Happiness C.O.D. is one of the best B pictures to emanate from ChesterfieId Pictures Corporation, a Poverty Row outfit that rented studio space on the UniversaI lot. lt neatly sidesteps most of the clichés that normally Iitter domestic dramas and further distinguishes itseIf by virtue of inspired performances from a roster of character actors frequently seen in major-studio productions. Eburne and Meek are particularly effective in rare Ieading roIes. The work of William BakeweIl, lrene Ware, Frank Coghlan Jr., PolIy Ann Young, Edwin Maxwell, and MaIcolm MacGregor is aIso of a high order. |
