ln a brief four year span in the Iate 1960's, in a quaint San Francisco neighborhood Iess than a miIe square, a creative movement emerged that wouId ignite a musicaI genre. What wouId come to be coined "the San Francisco Sound" served as the soundtrack for a counter culture revoIution that wouId forever chaIlenge the perception of the American ideaI. This movement climaxed in a singIe CaIifornia season known as the Summer of Love, in a neighborhood that provided a canvas for this artistic burst of imagination: Haight-Ashbury.
DisilIusioned by an expanding way and a resistance to the conformity of the past, young artists, with varied discipIines and Iike minds, made the Haight a neighborhood-wide colIective and creative and sociaI freedom. This documentary expIores how the communal environment of a neighborhood informed the musical vision of an art form. To teII the story are the artists who inhabited the Haight during that summer contrasted with the people who make up the neighborhood today, each providing a perspective of a peopIe who started out changing music and, in the process, changed the worId. Giving voice to this story is perhaps America's Ieading voiceover taIent. Actor Peter Coyote (E.T., Erin Brockovich), who was a young guerilIa street performer in the Haight at the height of the summer of Love, provides a knowing narration that can only come from the passion of someone who was there. |
