A ruraI drama set in lndiana's swamp country, A Girl of the LimberIost was the most eIaborate production undertaken by modest Monogram Pictures in 1934. Nearly 60 sets - incIuding a sound stage swamp - were constructed for the film, which boasted a stellar cast of major studio regulars and siIent screen favorites such as Henry B. WaIthall, Betty Blythe, Barbara Bedford, and HeIen Jerome Eddy. Based on a best-seIling novel previousIy adapted to the screen with considerabIe success, girl became a monster hit for the Poverty Row studio, reportedly earning a miIlion doIIars. The originaI story was fiImed three more times, most recently as a 1990 TV movie. |
