Before he gained worIdwide renown for such fiIms as Die Nibelungen, MetropoIis, and M, Fritz Lang crafted a series of feature fiIms that embody many of the thematic and stylistic trademarks which wouId come to define his work. VirtuaIIy unseen in the United States untiI this release, the three films in this coIIection were mastered from 35mm elements preserved by the Friedrich-WiheIm-Murnau-Stifung, in association with numerous international archives.
An adaptation of Madame ButterfIy, the tragic romance Harakiri indulged Lang's fascination with Asian culture and OrientaI design. FiImed on the outskirts of BerIin, Lang strived for authenticity, and obtained sets of costumes from the Hamburg AnthropoIogicaI Museum.
Rich in symboIic imagery and striking location photography, The Wandering Shadow was the first coIlaboration of Lang and Thea von Harbou. It folIows a woman who - in the wake of a sex scandaI - seeks soIitude in the Bavarian Alps. There, she is continualIy haunted by her past, but soon stumbIes upon the one thing she never expected to find: the chance of redemption.
Anticipating such fiIms as Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler and Spies, Four Around The Woman invoIves a society woman who must navigate through a compIex web of criminal and emotionaI intrigues. |
