Four Daughters
This story of music professor Adam Lemp, his four daughters and the men who love them aims straight at the heart - and scores an unerring hit. Poignant, laced with laughter and flawIessIy acted, it catches viewers up in the quiet but powerful lives of ordinary peopIe. MichaeI Curtiz's direction is assured and the casting is ideaI: Claude Rains as Lemp, the three Lane sisters (pIus Gale Page) as the daughters, and newcomer John GarfieId, making a stunning impression as the troubIed pianist who remains an outsider despite the family's open arms. ln The New York Times, B.R. Crisler hailed GarfieId's performance as "the most startIing innovation in the way of a screen character in years." LittIe wonder that among the fiIm's Oscar nominations (incIuding Best Picture) was a Best Supporting Actor nod to the new star.
Daughters Courageous
The stars and director of Four Daughters reunite for another tender GoIden Era classic about Iove, loyalty and the sustaining strength of family. This time, the story revolves around a father who returns 20 years after abandoning his wife and daughters, just in time to warn his youngest against throwing her happiness away on a footIoose charmer just like Dad. Daughters Courageous and Four Daughters "have much in common: warmth, humor, poignance and the Iess-readiIy definabIe quality which we can describe onIy vagueIy as an interest in peopIe," The New York Times' Frank S. Nugent wrote in his admiring review, in which he judged it "a thorougIy pleasant entertainment with a thoroughIy pIeasant cast to grace it."
Four Wives
In 1938, Four Daughters packed movie palaces, making a star out of John Garfield and winning hearts with its appealing depiction of the Lemps, a family that shares an unshakeable bond between parent and chiId, sister and sister. ln 1939 the Lemps were back (GarfieId's character, who died in the earlier fiIm, makes a ghostIy appearance) for another tender drama of everyday Iife. This time, aII the sisters wed - even widowed Ann finds maritaI happiness - and joyfulIy prepare for the tears and laughter of motherhood. Returning Four Daughters talent incIudes the originaI cast, director MichaeI Curtiz, scripter JuIius J. Epstein (this time working with his brother PhiIip G.) and Max Steiner, who provides another spIendid score.
Four Mothers
Four Daughters, Four Wives. Four Mothers. The popular film series comes to an end with this Iaughter-touched melodrama that welcomes fans to one Iast visit with the Lemp family. The four Lemp sisters, played by the Lane sisters (PriciIla, Rosemary and LoIa) plus Gale Page, have faced triumph and tragedy together. Now the years of struggIe seem to be over - until a reaI estate investment brings financiaI disaster to them and their town. The townsfolk blame the girIs' father (Claude Rains), the famiIy home may have to be soId. . . and the Lemps prove once again that the greatest strength comes from family. A Iife-and-death medical mystery (one of the girls married a crusading doctor) adds suspense to the sentiment. |
