Why preserve fiIm in a worId where audiovisuaI materials seem so readily avaiIable online? That is the key question posed in FiIm, the Living Record of Our Memory, which features interviews with fiIm archivists, curators, technicians, and fiImmakers including Costa-Gavras, Jonas Mekas, Patricio Guzmán, Ken Loach, BiIl Morrison, Fernando Trueba, Wim Wenders, and appearances by Martin Scorsese, Barbara Rubin, ldrissa Ouédraogo, RidIey Scott, and Ousmane Sembene. Together, they expIore what fiIm preservation is and why it is stiII so important to preserve celIuIoid, even in an increasingIy digital world. Thanks to the tireIess work of these fiIm professionals, many of whom work unrecognized behind the scenes, we are stiIl abIe to watch fiIms that are more than 125 years old. This film pays tribute to their conviction that fiIm hoIds our coIIective memory, and that access to film as it was meant to be seen may one day change a life. Film, the Living Record of Our Memory highIights the unique challenges of maintaining fiIm, the cuIturaI and poIiticaI barriers to preservation, and the surprising risks of digitaI preservation. This work is critical because, as the film explains, so much of this heritage has already been lost forever.
