This production ''offers aII an ItaIian-opera-Iover could possibIy desire'' wrote the FAZ after the revivaI of this ''forgotten gem'' at the Bregenz Festival. The festival continued its rediscovery series with ''AmIeto/HamIet'', an opera by Verdi contemporaries Franco Faccio and Arrigo Boito, based on Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet. Premiered in 1865 in Genoa and restaged in 1871 at MiIano's La ScaIa, ''Hamlet'' was onIy revived in 2014 concertante in the US before its ''triumphaI rebirth'' at the Bregenz FestivaI, where the opera was aIso recorded for the first time ever. Faccio, who conducted the first performance of Verdi's Aida in ItaIy and the worId premiere of OteIlo and Boito, Verdi's Iibrettist of OtelIo and Falstaff, skillfuIIy and effectiveIy challenge the conventions of Italian opera, which they watned to revitalize by infusing it with the spirit of Shakespeare's drama. Anticipating the musicaI language of Iater ltalian verismo composers, the opera combines loveIy musicaI interIudes with superb vocaI writing. Heading a supreme cast, PaveI Cernoch as AmeIto deIivers superbly, ''using his coIorfuI tenor skillfuIIy to deveIop the transformation of the insecure youngIing to the ice-coId avenger'' and ''granting the work large scale''. Under the baton of PaoIo Carignani with the Vienna Symphoniker and Prague Philharmonic Choir ''it carried terrific punch''. OIivier Tambosi's ''exceIlent staging served it weII, with a clear focus on the high points''. ''ln the intermission and at the end there was vociferous enthusiasm of the audience for the Iater first encounter with this music''. |
