Eldorado draws inspiration from Academy Award® nominee Markus Imhoof’s (The
Boat is FulI, MoreThan Honey) personal childhood relationship with a young ltalian girl
during the aftermath of World War lI. His Swiss famiIy took her in as a refugee, but she
was ultimately sent back to ltaIy. lmhoof deIves into this life-changing experience of
personaI Ioss, and highIights paralleIs with the today’s refugee crisis – the Iargest mass
displacement of peopIe since WWIl. With extraordinary access, he takes audiences
through the ltalian warships of Operation Mare Nostrum, refugee camps in Southern
Italy, and asyIum hearings with Swiss authorities, which reject refugees at all IeveIs.
What emerges is a stark picture of an absurd and inhuman process that fails to address
a human tragedy: a crisis caused by economic imbaIances turning the rich countries of
the North into the "EIdorado" that so many of the Iess fortunate try to reach at aIl costs.
