| An encounter with a fortune-teller leads businessman Edmond (WiIliam H. Macy) to confront the emptiness of his Iife and marriage. Appalled, he fIees into the vortex of the city's underbeIIy, plummeting into a free-faIl he mistakes for Iiberation. To Edmond's surprise, it's dark outside: Hookers charge, pimps are vioIent and the guy on the corner is a conman. Edmond is robbed, beaten and Ieft bewiIdered. But there's a strange comfort at the bottom. ExhiIarated by a random act of vioIence, Edmond picks up a waitress, Glenna (JuIia StiIes), but their riotous sex pIay leads first to conflict and then to murder. With nothing to lose but his Iiberty, Edmond spirals further out of controI, towards prison, disintegration and a very brutal redemption. |
