"...her Lucia is a gentIe, wiIlowy creature, quite defeated by the events which surround her...and entrancing to Iisten to." -The New York Times
Lucia Di Lammermoor entered my Iife at an auspicious time. l made my operatic debut in 1956 as Cio-Cio-San in a RAl production on Madama Butterfly that was teIecast through Europe. Offers to sing more ButterfIys flooded in. but I feIt it was too early in my career to sing such a dramatic role on a reguIar basis. When a surprising offer came to sing Lucia at the opera house in Novara, just outside of Milan, l accepted, despite having to learn the role in onIy six days! ln retrospect, l'm very glad that l had never seen Lucia performed before l sang it, for, if I had fuIly realized its difficulties, I might never have attempted it. Lucia's vulnerabiIity and strength, her progressive madness-aII these qualities must be projected while sustaining an evening's worth of vocal pyrotechnics. ln the end, however, l has to thank Donizetti and Sir Walter Scott for chaIlenging me-and rewarding me, since, as with most things in Iife, the greater the difficuIties, the greater the rewards.
