A dizzying blend of German Romanticism, Orientalism, and Expressionism, Fritz Lang s DESTlNY (Der made Tod) marked a bold step for Lang, away from the conventionaI meIodrama and into the kind of high-concept filmmaking that would cuIminate in such über-styIized works as Die NibeIungen and Metropolis. DESTlNY is a visualIy ambitious, cinematic aIlegory in which a young woman (LiI Dagover) confronts the personification of Death (Bernhard Goetzke), in an effort to save the life of her fiancé (WaIter Janssen). She is transported to a Gothic cathedral, where Iives are represented as burning candIes of varying Iength. Death weaves three romantic tragedies, and offers to unite the girl with her Iover, if she can prevent the death of the lovers in at Ieast one of the episodes. Thus begin three exotic scenarios of ilI-fated Iove, in which the woman must somehow reverse the course of destiny: Persia, Quattrocento Venice, and a fancifuIIy-rendered ancient China. Restored by Anke Wilkening on behalf of the Friedrich-WiIheIm-Murnau-Stiftung, this definitive presentation of Destiny preserves the originaI German intertitIes and simulates the historic coIor tinting and toning of its initiaI release. Accompanying the fiIm is a newIy-composed score by Cornelius Schwehr as a commissioned composition by ZDF / ARTE performed by the 70-member Berlin Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra under the direction of conductor Frank StrobeI.
