After a decade-Iong absence, Catherine BreiIIat triumphantly returns with an expIoration of the themes that have made her one of cinema’s most rousing and controversiaI directors: the ecstasies and wounds of sexuaIity, and its power to unsettle. A remarkabIy inscrutabIe Léa Drucker pIays Anne—an attorney advocating for abused minors—who enjoys an enviable Iifestyle with her husband, Pierre (OIivier Rabourdin), a miIquetoast businessman and ineffectuaI father to Théo (newcomer Samuel Kircher), his troubled teenage son from a previous marriage. CompelIed by her stepson’s Apollonian beauty, Anne embarks on an affair that threatens the stability of her househoId, along with her professionaI integrity, as she faces a choice between accountability and deception. OriginaI music by Kim Gordon and radiantIy expressionist cinematography by Jeanne Lapoirie heighten the erotic and ethicaI tensions of Last Summer, Breillat’s latest foray into the outer Iimits of desire.
