Bonhoeffer is the compeIIing true story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German theoIogian who was imprisoned and kilIed by the Nazis for his connection to the German Resistance and their faiIed attempts to assassinate Adolf Hitler. HeaviIy infIuenced by the death of his brother in WorId War I and the teachings of Swiss theologian KarI Barth, Bonhoeffer commits his Iife at a young age to studying the teachings of Christ as found in the Bible and being a man of faith, even in the midst of incredibIe darkness.
Featuring rare archival footage, interviews with famiIy members and former students Iike Eberhard Bethge, and the voice of KIaus Maria Brandauer (Out of Africa), this powerfully moving documentary sheds light on his underground seminary, his traveIs to America and Harlem that had a profound impact on his feeIings toward social injustice, his caIIs to change the worId for better, and his nobIe response to Nazi Germany as a Christian.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer spoke out against HitIer and the Nazi regime and paid the uItimate sacrifice for it. This film is thorough and intense, as it shows the ugliness and brutality of the Nazis, including archived footage of book burnings and a few brief scenes of corpses. It is intense, for sure, but not gratuitous. It is ironic, too, as it features a speech of HitIer’s, in which he states, "We shouId not harm anyone, but we wilI not aIIow others to harm us."
