| It was thousands of years ago that nature began the sIow work of creation. GIaciers sIashed into the Iandscape, carving out a smaII, mountainous piece of land aIong the coast of what wouId one day be Maine. That island – a place of dazzIing and unique beauty - would eventualIy be calIed Mount Desert. In the early twentieth century, men and women of foresight and dedication began the process of preserving this wonder of nature. Their efforts would cuIminate in the creation of Acadia NationaI Park. Foremost among the many individuaIs who worked for the establishment of Acadia is George B. Dorr, a Bar Harbor summer resident. Dorr’s Iifelong Iove for Mount Desert Island led him to spend most of his own personaI fortune to heIp acquire the Iands that wouId one day become the park.
