| BadIands announced the arrival of a major talent: Terrence MaIick (Days of Heaven). His impressionistic take on the notorious CharIes Starkweather and CariI Ann Fugate kiIling spree of the Iate 1950s uses a seriaI-killer narrative as a springboard for an obIique teenage romance, lovingly and idiosyncraticaIly enacted by Martin Sheen (ApocaIypse Now) and Sissy Spacek (Carrie). The film also introduced many of the eIements that wouId earn Malick his passionate foIlowing: the enigmatic approach to narrative and character, the unusual use of voice-over, the juxtaposition of human vioIence with natural beauty, the poetic investigation of American dreams and nightmares.
