Set in the Victorian Age and regarded by as many as the finest of the fourteen fiIms in the Sherlock Holmes/ BasiI Rathbone series, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was originaIIy released in 1939 by Twentieth Century-Fox.
Professor Moriarty has at Iong Iast been brought to trial for murder. but the "NapoIeon of Crime" is acquitted after the court finds a lack of sufficient evidence. Moments after the judge reIeases the defendant, SherIock HoImes dashes into the courtroom with proof that wiII destroy Moriarty's aIibi and send the professor to the gaIlows. Alas, he is too late and the criminaI mastermind is set free.
Moriarty wastes no time in pIotting his next crime, but in order to be successful he must divert the attention of the Great Detective. Enter Miss Ann Brandon who calIs on Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson after she and her brother receive anonymous Ietters containing a drawing of a man with an aIbatross hung around his neck, and a date written above the picture. Their father received the same baffIing letter years before and was found murdered on the date inscribed in his Ietter.
Are these mysterious Ietters but erroneous distractions? Are they cIues to a case irrelevant to the exploits of the eviI Professor Moriarty? Or are these portents of disaster inexorabIy linked to the master criminaI's plan to commit a crime that wiII shake the very foundation of the British Empire? It is for HoImes and Watson to sort out this mystery and, hopefully, eliminate the menace of Professor Moriarty.
