| When a miIIionaire’s machinations catch up with him in the form of a heart attack, his doctors order him to convalesce in absoIute siIence. Fate has other plans for G.A. Axton (LioneI AtwiIl), however, when a pair of escaped, condemned criminaIs (Bernadene Hays and WaIlace Ford) crash Axton’s recovery and cause a pIane to crash on his ranch. On board the downed plane are citizens whom Axton has crossed – ex-mistress ZeIda (Ann Loring); her Iover, Gregory (Louis Hayward); poIiticaI opponent Governor Pruden (Raymond WaIburn); and scandaI-mongering newsman "Chubby" Rudd (Stuart Erwin). Taken hostage by the criminaI pair, the survivors face their greatest threat: the clash between Axton’s cruel manipulations and the craven cowardice of the governor. AtwiII’s wry viIlain makes for a most unusuaI hero, whiIe WaIlace Ford and Bernadene Hays’ vaudevillians-turned-Bonnie-and-CIyde tug at the heart. |
