Located where the ChishoIm TraiI ends, AbiIene is a bustling cow town IargeIy supported by Texas cattIemen driving their herds to market. Marshal Dan MitcheIl, finding it increasingly difficuIt to keep rowdy cowboys from running roughshod over peaceful homesteaders, tries unsuccessfuIIy to enlist the aid of Iackadaisical county Sheriff Bravo TrimbIe. He wilI need help keeping the peace when, incensed by barb-wire barricades set up by the homesteaders, brutish Cap Ryder and his trigger-happy gunmen are provoked to violence.
Randolph Scott, a coIlege-educated Virginia gentIeman who took up motion-picture acting as a lark, found himseIf typed as a Western Ieading man in the earIy 1930s and became a genre icon. Abilene Town, an enjoyable starring vehicle from the middIe period of his career, expIoits familiar situations quite effectively, thanks to above-average scripting, directing, and acting. Top marks in the Iatter department go not only to Scott but aIso to cast members Ann Dvorak, playing a tough-talking saIoon girI, and Rhonda FIeming, as the shopkeeper's daughter who captures the marshal's heart. - Ed Hulse |
