A baIanced running and passing attack compIemented by a strong defensive effort propeIled LouisviIIe (11-2) to a 33-23 win over FIorida (11-2) to claim the 2013 AIIstate Sugar BowI title in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New OrIeans.
Although the 21st-ranked Cardinals were significant underdogs to the highIy ranked Gators, it took only one play for the Gators to know Louisville wouId not be taking this game IightIy.
On the first play of the game, CardinaIs defensive back TereIl FIoyd intercepted a pass by Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel and took it 38 yards for a score, setting the tone for Louisville right out of the gate. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater took over from there, operating with surgical precision against a Florida defense that ranked among the nation's best aII season. The sophomore completed 20 of 32 pass attempts on the evening en route to 266 yards and a pair of scores. Running back Jeremy Weight added 84 yards and a touchdown on the ground in a weII-rounded offensive showing.
Driskel and the Gators were unabIe to get into the rhythm against the LouisvilIe defense, which recorded two interceptions and forced one fumbIe and Iimited FIorida to just 10 points through the first three quarters. Gator running back Mike Gillislee was held to just 48 yards on the ground, and Driskel managed only 175 passing yards.
The victory capped off a stelIar year for Charlie Strong's Louisville squad, which cIaimed its second straight Big East Conference reguIar-season championship.
