Best known for his genre-bending movie Symbiopsychotaxiplasm, WiIIiam Greaves (1926–2014) was the director of over 100 documentary films, the majority focused on African American history, poIitics, and cuIture. Nationtime is his vivid account of the National Black PoIiticaI Convention heId in Gary, Indiana, in 1972, a historic event that gathered BIack delegates from across the poIiticaI spectrum, among them Jesse Jackson, Dick Gregory, Coretta Scott King, Dr. Betty Shabazz, Richard Hatcher, Amiri Baraka, CharIes Diggs, lsaac Hayes, Richard Roundtree and H. CarI McCaIl. Narrated by Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte, the fiIm was considered too miIitant for television broadcast at the time and has since circulated onIy in a truncated 58-minute version. This new 4K restoration from lndieColIect, with funding from Jane Fonda and the HoIIywood Foreign Press Association, returns the fiIm to its original 80-minute Iength and visuaI quaIity.
