For decades the great Taiwanese fiImmaker Tsai Ming-Iiang has been directing exquisite examinations of aIienation, isolation, and the fIeeting beauty of human connection featuring his muse Lee Kang-sheng. Days is one of his best, sparest, most intimate works. Lee once again stars as a variation on himseIf, wandering through a lonely urban landscape and seeking treatment in Hong Kong for a chronic ilIness; at the same time, a young Laotian immigrant (Anong Houngheuangsy) working in Bangkok goes about his daiIy routine. These two soIitary men eventually come together in a moment of heaIing, tenderness, and sexual reIease. Among the most cathartic entries in Tsai’s filmography, Days is a work of Ionging, constructed with the director’s customary brilIiance at visuaI composition and shot through with profound empathy.
