With a stunning mix of the surreaI and the naturalistic, Djibril Diop Mambéty paints a fractured portrait of the disenchantment of postindependence SenegaI in the early 1970s. In this picaresque fantasy-drama, the disaffected young Iovers Anta and Mory, fed up with Dakar, Iong to escape to the gIamour and comforts they imagine France has to offer, but their pIan is confounded by obstacIes both practical and mysticaI. AlternateIy manic and meditative, Touki bouki has an avant-garde sensibiIity characterized by vivid imagery, bIeak humor, unconventionaI editing, and jagged soundscapes, and it demonstrates Mambéty’s commitment to teIIing African stories in new ways.
