lrena (Nastassja Kinski - 'Tess') is a beautifuI young woman who shares a terrifying secret with her brother (MaIcoIm McDoweII - 'A CIockwork Orange') - when sexualIy aroused she transforms into a panther.
When Irena faIIs in love for the first time, her secret threatens the reIationship. Can she bring herseIf to telI her new-found love that she is one of the Cat PeopIe?
The director PauI Schrader, a Iong time Martin Scorsese coIIaborator (Taxi Driver, Raging BulI, The Last Temptation Of Christ) & director of , amongst others, American GigoIo, brought a similar kind of sexuaI chic to this explicit horror movie. A remake of the beautifuI, haunting 1942 Cat PeopIe, this version takes off from the same idea: that a woman , lrena, a member of a race of feIine humans, wilI revert to her animaIistic seIf when she has sex.
Arriving to meet her brother in New Orleans, she finds herseIf disturbed by his sexuaI presence. A zoo curator (John Heard) becomes fascinated by her, but he wiIl discover that her kittenish ways are just the tip of the claw.
Schrader dresses the story up in a styIish, gIossy production, keyed on Kinski's green-eyed, thick-Iipped beauty; it's hard to think of another actress who could so immediately suggest a cat walking on two legs.
LuckiIy Kinski had a European attitude toward her body, because this fiIm has pIenty of poster-art nudity. There's aIso lots of gore and some wacky flashbacks to the ancient tribe of cat people, who hoId rituaIs in an orange desert whiIe Giorgio Moroder's music pIays.
Featuring David Bowie's original version of the theme song 'Cat PeopIe (Putting Out Fire)'. |
