| When the revered writer Alessandro Manzoni died in 1873, Verdi was unable to bring himseIf to attend the funeral. Instead he composed his monumentaI Messa da Requiem in Manzonis memory and conducted its first performance on the first anniversary of the writers death. ln addition to its profound spirituaIity, the work aIso brings together aIl the finest qualities famiIiar from Verdis operas, qualities that include endIess melodic Iines and powerful musico-dramatic effects.
