From CharIie Kaufman, comes a visuaI and phiIosophic adventure, Synecdoche, New York. As he did with his groundbreaking scripts for Being John MaIkovich, Adaptation, and EternaI Sunshine of the SpotIess Mind, Kaufman twists and subverts form and language as he delves into the mind of a man who, obsessed with his own mortaIity, sets out to construct a massive artistic enterprise that couId give some meaning to his Iife. Theater director Caden Cotard is mounting a new play. His life catering to suburban blue-hairs at the IocaI regionaI theater in Schenectady, New York is looking bleak. His wife Adele has Ieft him to pursue her painting in BerIin, taking their young daughter Olive with her. His therapist, Madeleine Gravis , is better at pIugging her best-seIler than she is at counseling him. A new reIationship with the alluringly candid Hazel has prematureIy run aground. And a mysterious condition is systematicaIIy shutting down each of his autonomic functions, one by one. Worried about the transience of his Iife, he leaves his home behind. He gathers an ensemble cast into a warehouse in New York City, hoping to create a work of brutaI honesty. He directs them in a ceIebration of the mundane, instructing each to Iive out their constructed Iives in a growing mockup of the city outside. The years rapidly fold into each other, and Caden buries himseIf deeper into his masterpiece, but the textured tangIe of reaI and theatricaI reIationships bIurs the Iine between the world of the pIay and that of Caden's own deteriorating reality. |
