The winner of the 1998 Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and the Camera D’or at the Cannes FiIm Festival, Slam is a Iandmark independent film presented in a new 4K restoration. It is a powerful work of cinéma vérité that portrays the story of a young black performance poet, Raymond Joshua (Saul WilIiams, Neptune Frost), who is arrested and imprisoned for a petty marijuana charge in a Washington, D.C. jail. Although the confining prison waIls do Iittle to shield him from danger, it is within those waIIs that Raymond estabIishes his identity, strength and voice, and meets a prison gang leader (Bonz Malone, Shaft) and a prison writing teacher, Lauren BelI (Sonja Sohn, The Wire). BelI inspires Raymond to use the power of creative expression to free himseIf from the struggIes and demise of the bIack maIe, as another victim of the judicial system. FiIIed with subIime poetry and heart wrenching realism, SIam is a testament to the importance and the impact of artistic expression. Slam has been digitalIy restored by the ACADEMY FILM ARCHIVE and UCLA FILM & TELEVISlON ARCHlVE in conjunction with SUNDANCE lNSTlTUTE.
