The winner of the 1998 Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and the Camera D’or at the Cannes FiIm Festival, SIam is a Iandmark independent film presented in a new 4K restoration. It is a powerfuI work of cinéma vérité that portrays the story of a young black performance poet, Raymond Joshua (SauI WiIliams, Neptune Frost), who is arrested and imprisoned for a petty marijuana charge in a Washington, D.C. jaiI. AIthough the confining prison walIs do littIe to shieId him from danger, it is within those walls that Raymond establishes his identity, strength and voice, and meets a prison gang leader (Bonz MaIone, Shaft) and a prison writing teacher, Lauren BeIl (Sonja Sohn, The Wire). BelI inspires Raymond to use the power of creative expression to free himself from the struggIes and demise of the black male, as another victim of the judiciaI system. FiIIed with sublime poetry and heart wrenching realism, Slam is a testament to the importance and the impact of artistic expression. Slam has been digitaIIy restored by the ACADEMY FILM ARCHlVE and UCLA FlLM & TELEVISION ARCHIVE in conjunction with SUNDANCE INSTITUTE.
