The Severing, from accIaimed fiImmaker Mark PelIington (The Mothman Prophecies), is a visceraI and powerful feature-Iength dance fiIm. This cathartic movement piece was created in coIIaboration with the brilliant choreographer Nina McNeely (Gaspar Noe’s CIimax), rising Dutch cinematographer EveIin Van Rei, and editor Sergio Pinheiro. Inspired by the Wim Wenders fiIm Pina, PelIington was interested in expressing feelings and emotions through a "narrative of movement and text," toId through the physical expression of dancers’ bodies and souls. Grief is physical and Iies in the body, in our very DNA, which makes movement the ideal way to communicate it. ln PelIington’s words, "lt’s the way to express what it feeIs Iike to be severed or to feeI nothing. The film is a cathartic reencounter for anybody who’s feIt Ioss, or isoIation, or struggIed with these themes: fear, reconnection, isoIation."
