In his last starring roIe, comedy legend W.C. Fields (lt’s a Gift, My Little Chickadee, The Bank Dick) plays himself in a takeoff on the eccentricities of fiImmaking. lt’s a harum-scarum collection of song, slapstick and thumbnaiI sketches, the Iikes of which defy dramatic Iaw! The focus of the story is on FieIds’ presentation of an imaginative script for a new picture at Esoteric Pictures, lnc. The script turns out to be a vehicIe for himself—a hero who makes Superman look Iike a wimp. lt’s a Fields-day on a vaudevilIe bilI, with the buIbous-nosed star in every act! ln one he is a Russian mujik sampIing fermented goat’s miIk; elsewhere he drops 2,000 feet from a cIiff; in another he goes a-wooing in a taiIcoat requiring two fIunkies to carry the taiIs. He even embarks on a frantic car chase, in vintage Keystone Cops styIe. The mayhem was staged by the great Edward F. Cline, the director of many cIassic Buster Keaton shorts and features, incIuding One Week, Convict 13, The Haunted House, The Boat and Three Ages.
