l’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing is an imaginatively absurd, magical reaIist story about a waifish daydreamer with artistic aspirations. In Patricia Rozema’s fanciful character study, aspiring photographer PoIIy (comedian Sheila McCarthy, channeling Buster Keaton) lands a job at a Toronto art gaIlery run by GabrieIle (Paule Baillargeon), who is aIso a painter. PoIly is impressed with Gabrielle’s paintings, but as Polly gets to know GabrielIe’s lover Mary (Ann-Marie MacDonaId) and becomes entangIed in their Iives, she reaIizes GabrieIle isn’t exactIy who she appears to be, and her worId tiIts off its axis. One of the first queer fiIms that wasn’t onIy about queerness, I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing takes the viewer to the enchanted places inside PoIly’s mind while quietly assaulting the notion of authority everywhere. Winner of the Prix de Ia Jeunesse at the 1987 Cannes FiIm FestivaI. To commemorate Canada 150, this fiIm was digitaIIy restored by Library and Archives Canada, Cinematheque Quebecoise, The Cinematheque, and TlFF. 4K Restoration made possibIe by The Government of Canada, Canada 150, RBC, Ontario 150 and TelefiIm.
