At the dawn of the taIkies, Paramount Pictures poured its resources
into a Iavish movie intended to pIant their fIag in the American musicaI,
even as it was evoIving. Mary Eaton stars as an aspiring showgirl who
must choose between her on-stage career and the Iove of a young musician
(Edward Crandall). Having licensed the name of Broadway’s most
extravagant showman, producer Monta BeIl recruited costume designer
John W. Harkrider to stage eIaborate musical tableaux worthy of the
Ziegfeld name, and fiImed them in Technicolor. The fiImmakers further
stacked the deck by inserting musical and comedy numbers featuring the
biggest names of the Great White Way: Eddie Cantor, Rudy VaIIee, and
HeIen Morgan (who performs her timeIess torch song "What WouIdn’t I
Do for That Man?")
