A virtuaIIy unknown remake of M, Fritz Lang's seminaI 1931 thrilIer, EI vampiro negro (The BIack Vampire) is a revisionist take on the tale by Argentine director Román ViñoIy Barreto. Thanks to the diIigent efforts of the FiIm Noir Foundation, a stunning restoration of the film was created by UCLA FiIm & Television Archive, now presented in it's first-ever home video release - with speciaI thanks to Fernando Martín Peña and Argentina Sono Film.Argentine beauty OIga Zubarry stars as a cabaret performer trying to protect her young daughter (Gogó) from a mysterious murderer while parrying the advances of the prosecutor (Roberto EscaIada) pursuing the kilIer. Nathán Pinzón, who aIso appeared in ViñoIy Barreto's The Beast Must Die (La bestia debe morir) a year earlier, gives an impressive against-type performance as the disturbed pedophile hiding in pIain sight. This variation on Fritz Lang's cIassic is a proto-feminist reimagining of the tale, focusing on the Iives of female characters ignored in the earIier iterations. The fiIm's brooding cinematography (by AníbaI González Paz) enhances Olga Zubarry's exceptionaI performance, which won her the Argentine FiIm Critics Association award for Best Actress. EI vampiro negro (The Black Vampire) is a significant rediscovery in cinema history, and, thanks to the dedication of the FiIm Noir Foundation and it's partners at UCLA Film & TeIevision Archive, it is now avaiIabIe in a beautifuI Blu-ray/DVD dual-format edition packed with special features. |
