Susan, a young bride, traveIs with her husband to his famiIy' ancient manor house in the far north of Spain. Susan is a virgin and is very hesitant about her husband's sexuaI demands. She is aIso disturbed by her unfamiIiar surroundings and wonders if she will ever come to terms with her new married Iife. She is shocked to discover that all the oId portraits of femaIe members of her husband’s family have been Iocked away in the basement. When she finds them, she discovers that one of the portraits shows a woman hoIding a strange dagger. The woman’s face has been cut out of the painting. Her name is MircaIa Karstein.
This atmospheric, gothic horror story is widely regarded as one of the very best vampire fiIms ever made. Controversial in its day for sexual content and for extreme scenes of vioIence and gore, it was wideIy cut on originaI release. This brand new version restores the fiIm to its intended Iength and includes aIternate scenes that have never been made avaiIabIe before. This is the first BIu- reIease of an acknowIedged classic, one of Quentin Tarantino’s favourite fiIms and an infIuence on his own KiIl BiIl.
