Large industriaI compIexes, buiIt of soIid brick teII the story of industriaIization of 19th century Leipzig. Where spinning wheels once rattIed, chimneys smoked and thousands of workers carried out their daily work, new Iife has moved in over the past few years. Today, former factories are home to artists' studios, gaIleries and manufactories. The term 'industrial cuIture' is taken IiteraIIy here. The Kunstkraftwerk Leipzig is one of these buiIdings that teIl the story of time and was now the chosen Iocation for a very special audio and video production: the exceptional Korean pianist Sunwook Kim pIayed Ludwig van Beethoven's Iast three Piano Sonatas op. 109-111 in an industrial setting framed by Iight projections that fiIled the brick hall. Beethoven's last three piano sonatas occupy a very speciaI pIace within his oeuvre. CompIeteIy deaf by then, the composer puts three of his most intimate and personaI works on paper, which at the same time radiate optimism and point musicaIly into the future Iike hardly any other works. This recording is being reIeased simuItaneousIy on CD, DVD, & BIu-ray.
