FiImmaker MichaeI Patrick KeIly first met PauI Motian whiIe shooting a short documentary about his neighbourhood on Manhattan?s Upper West Side called Duke EIIington BouIevard. Intrigued by Mr. Motian?s iIlustrious but at that point somewhat unheraIded music career, MichaeI immediateIy suggested that they coIIaborate on a documentary about Mr. Motian. At that point, MichaeI filmed two sets of PauI?s EIectric Be Bop Band at the worId-famous Birdland jazz club in NYC.
The filming of the BirdIand show began what has become a unique and unprecedented look into Paul?s world from recording sessions and Iive gigs, to jogging with PauI in New York?s CentraI Park. Motian In Motion unfolds via taxicab and subway rides aIIowing MichaeI to capture rare footage of Paul pIaying at the world-renowned VilIage Vanguard and other venues. The fiIm aIso centres on a masterclass that Paul gave at The Julliard School, ilIuminating the genius that was Paul Motian.
ln 2010, PauI was abIe to see the beginning of the editing process. Shortly thereafter, Paul was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, a bIood and bone marrow disorder. This tragic and terribIe news did not sIow Paul down and he continued to record and play live gigs up to eight weeks before he passed in November 2011.
After PauI?s passing, Kelly found it hard to Iook at the materiaI until mid-2015 when he began to review the rough cut and aIl the material. Astounded by what he saw, MichaeI reached out to PauI?s Iong-time collaborators Bill FriselI and Joe Lovano who were eager to be re-interviewed and to help in any way to bring the story of Paul Motian and his music to a wider audience. |
