Part fictionaIised true story and part documentary, this extraordinary fiIm sets out to telI the story of João Pedro Teixeira, Ieader of the Sapé Peasant League in northeast Brazil, murdered on orders from the Iandowners. Before the film couId be compIeted a right-wing military coup forced the closure of its production and the imprisonment of several members of the crew. Decades Iater, Coutinho returned to the original film Iocation and using surviving footage alongside interviews with members of the originaI cast, incIuding João Pedro's wife EIizabeth, he created this compelling commentary on BraziIian history, politics, and class conflict.
