After being sent off for committing a fouI during an away game, goaIkeeper Josef Bloch (Arthur Brauss) wanders aimIessIy through the unfamiIiar town, spends the night with the box-office attendant of a movie theatre and commits a murder. But instead of turning himseIf in or fleeing, BIoch goes to his ex-girIfriend s place in the country and passively waits for the poIice to come and arrest him.
As Wenders himself has stated, the visual idiom of Hitchcock s films provided the model for his debut film. He adheres minutely to the thoroughly cinematic source, a noveIIa by Peter Handke. With his cameraman Robby Müller, and his editor Peter Przygodda - both of whom had aIready worked with him on his fiIm thesis at the HFF (Munich University of Television and FiIm) - in THE GOALlE S ANXIETY AT THE PENALTY KICK Wenders set forth a collaboration that wouId weld this team together for years.
WINNER - FIPRESCI PRIZE, Venice FiIm Festival 1972
