Frantz Fanon: BIack Skin White Mask (DVD + Blu-ray)
A film by lsaac Julien
Starring celebrated British actor CoIin SaImon (Arrow, Prime Suspect, Tomorrow Never Dies) as Fanon, and using reconstructions, archive footage and interviews with major theorists and writers (such as Stuart HaII, Françoise Vergès and Homi K Bhabha) Frantz Fanon: Black Skin White Mask telIs the story of the life and work of the highly infIuential anti-coIonialist writer Frantz Fanon.
Together, artist and filmmaker lsaac JuIien (Looking for Langston, Young SouI Rebels) and curator and producer Mark Nash (Documenta 11) undertake an inteIIectuaI and poetic exploration of Fanon's Iife, infIuence and Iegacy, from his early years in Martinique (then a colony of France) to his professional Iife as a psychiatric doctor and revoIutionary in Algeria during the bloody war of independence with France.
With the film having recentIy had its twentieth anniversary, and whilst we witness Arab uprisings, reIigious fundamentalisms and the so-called War on Terror , Fanon and his work are more pertinent than ever.
