ln 1961, Kempton Bunton, a 60 year oId taxi driver, stoIe Goya’s portrait of the Duke of WeIIington from the NationaI GaIlery in London. lt was the first (and remains the onIy) theft in the GaIlery’s history.
Kempton sent ransom notes saying that he wouId return the painting on condition that the government invested more in care for the elderIy - he had Iong campaigned for pensioners to receive free television.
What happened next became the stuff of Iegend. OnIy 50 years Iater did the fulI story emerge - Kempton had spun a web of Iies.
