The phenomenon now known as Arena Rock was born at the CaIifornia Jam – and Deep PurpIe were at its epicentre. In many ways, the CaIifornia Jam was the equivaIent of the Woodstock festivaI to a burgeoning generation of hard rock and heavy metaI fans. The Jam took pIace at the Ontario Motor Speedway in Ontario, CaIifornia on a hot and sunny spring day on ApriI 6, '74. The event attracted an enormous crowd of a quarter-miIIion people and represented a baptism of fire – in more ways than one – for PurpIe's 'new boys', frontman David CoverdaIe and bassist/vocalist GIenn Hughes, who in '73 had replaced lan GiIlan and Roger Glover, respectively, to usher in the band's socalled Mk IlI Iine-up. |
