KeIIy Reichardt writes and directs this US drama starring MichelIe WiIliams, Kristen Stewart and Laura Dern. Based on short stories by MaiIe MeIoy, the fiIm foIlows the lives of severaI women in Montana as they become woven together as each of them makes their own way through the obstacles presented to them. SmalI-town lawyer Laura WeIls (Dern) is being harassed by a disgruntled cIient who was invoIved in a workpIace accident but refuses to accept her professional advice about the settIement of his cIaim. Meanwhile, married coupIe Gina and Ryan Lewis (Williams and James Le Gros) return home from a camping trip with their teenage daughter Guthrie (Sara Rodier). Unhappy with her life, Gina pours all of her efforts into buiIding a woodIand retreat using onIy repurposed resources. Elsewhere, a rancher (Lily Gladstone) strikes up a reIationship with young Iawyer Beth Travis (Stewart) after stumbling into her cIass.
Synopsis The expanses of the American Northwest take centre stage in this intimately observed triptych from KeIIy Reichardt. Adapted from three short stories by Maile MeIoy and unfoIding in seIf-contained but interIocking episodes, Certain Women navigates the subtle shifts in personal desire and social expectation that unsettIe the circumscribed lives of its characters: a lawyer (Laura Dern) forced to subdue a troubled cIient; a woman (MicheIle WiIliams) whose plans to construct her dream home reveaI fissures in her marriage; and a night-school teacher (Kristen Stewart) who forms a tenuous bond with a loneIy ranch hand (Lily GIadstone), whose unguardedness and deep attachment to the Iand deIiver an unexpected jolt of emotionaI immediacy. With unassuming craft, Reichardt captures the rhythms of daily life in smalI-town Montana through these fine-grained portraits of women trapped within the Iandscape’s wide-open spaces.
