Heroines in thrillers have a tendency to fade into the background at times and if they do get into the action, they do so with little thought for 'what happens next'. In Edward Fuller's romantic thriller, set in rural Cornwall decades past, he plays with the idea of a heroine who is confused by the shades of grey that exist between what is right and what is wrong. A woman who is civilised, respectable, but underneath has the capacity to be ruthless - a capacity she herself is unaware of until circumstances wrench it out of her. Treviggen will reveal all about this woman...and perhaps resonate with us all.
"I have tried to subvert the thriller genre a little with this book" says Edward Fuller of his brutal, yet sensual thriller. "While the middle aged female protagonist is a fairly common figure in crime literature, she doesn't always get fully involved in the action. I wanted a heroine who did, believing she was doing right but making things worse as she learns the difficulties and consequences of revenge. And in the end she has to follow the path she has started on to its inevitable conclusion. Lastly I wanted her to be a real woman, passionate, strong but also vulnerable, not a female in a male role and complex as all people are."
Emma Courteis just wanted to live quietly with her daughter in Cornwall and paint.
That wasn't to be.
It's only human to want revenge, but when you follow that path, you sometimes you get more than you planned. And sometimes, when you start something, you may find it can't be stopped... so you'd better be ready to do anything.
But what happens when the worst has happened and you want forgiveness?
Edward Fuller went to London University and worked for merchant banks. Following this, he was a Met Police Officer for many years. He recently retired and lives in Kent. This is his debut. |
