Preface THE Land of the Crooked Tree, found on old maps as LArbre Croche, is on the northern tip of the lower peninsula of Michigan and was one of the last forest regions in eastern America to be settled by whites. It is with the activities of the early settlers there, in the 1870s and 8os, after it was opened to homesteaders, that this book is concerned. The Land of the Crooked Tree is not an autobiography, al though it is brazenly personal from beginning to end. The people all lived, though a few in real life bore different names. The incidents recorded all took place, though the order in which they are related is not strictly chronological. Some invention has been used to reconstruct conversations that took place so many years ago. There is no development of plot through the textj there is no climax at the end in fact, there has been no effort to use the devices dear to the hearts of professional writers. Spontaneity, it is hoped, will enable the reader to share more fully the physi cal and mental pleasures, the adventures, dangers, and incon veniences of pioneer life in a forest. u. p.
