| On a Tuesday in November, Joseph Navarro swerves his truck to save a child who runs into traffic. The woman in the other lane wakes up in a hospital room, unable to walk.
He doesn't call. He doesn't explain. Every morning, he leaves a single white rose at the nurses' station and goes to work.
She tells herself she will send word to stop it. She doesn't send word.
Mary Callahan is forty-one, an interior designer who has spent years building a life that fits her exactly. She is not accustomed to needing anyone. But Joseph Navarro keeps showing up, asking nothing of her, giving nothing but his quiet presence and one white rose. Somewhere in the months of coffee and careful conversation and a man who simply refuses to leave, something she was not planning on begins to grow.
What develops between them is slow. Earned. Told in the precise register of two people who have learned not to reach for more than the moment can give. Until, finally, they do.
The Fixable Thing is a quiet, deeply felt love story about repair: of a body, a life, and the particular courage it takes to let yourself be found. |
