Jake and Scarlett are back! As a former member of the FBI's prestigious Hostage Rescue Team, Jake Shepherd is accustomed to rushing into danger when others are rushing out. His experience and training, combined with his intelligence and intuitive nature, make him a highly respected, sought-after investigator--despite his lack of social diplomacy and lack of patience with dishonesty. When an upscale, oceanfront home on Florida's Atlantic Coast is robbed of multi-million-dollar art, and the lady of the house, an oil heiress, is killed, local law enforcement initially believes the crime was a random home invasion gone wrong. However, the insurance carrier's head of fraud is skeptical and hires Jake to investigate, assisted by Scarlett Kavanaugh. After review of the file and meeting with detectives in charge of the case, Jake is convinced there is more to learn and looks at the husband. Although Rick Jameson has an airtight alibi, Jake believes he is hiding something. When members of the FBI's Art Theft Team join the investigation, additional bodies begin to fall, and additional suspects emerge. As Jake works with the detectives and FBI agents, unexpected events ramp up the need to know who the mastermind behind the crime was--and who may be in the line of fire?
