The novel's title refers to a secret society of prostitutes who work in a place called Sub Rosa; as they battle "live ones" (johns) and fight to find a way out of the maze of feral darkness in which they find themselves, they are also seeking to reclaim their memories and their identities as daughters, granddaughters, and women.
