When her injured mother is refused treatment by a clinic system that cannot verify she is herself, fifteen-year-old Maddy Bennett does the only thing that still works: she writes it down.

What begins as one girl's private record of harm becomes a public clock-counting the minutes until a named human answers. As the Counterclock spreads from clinics to schools to transit gates to city offices, Maddy's simple act of witnessing grows into Midday: a movement that forces invisible systems into the light, one timestamped refusal at a time.

But records have power, and power attracts owners. The institutions that ignored Maddy now want to protect her record, shape it, and finally possess it. Pushed out of the movement she started, she learns the oldest lesson in any archive-the scoreboard tells you who won, but the book tells you what happened. To keep the truth alive, Maddy must decide what kind of refusal can save a record without surrendering it.

A sharp, near-future novel about artificial intelligence, accountability, and the cost of keeping the book open
